I've coached little league for a couple years now and I decided to finally take the plunge and get one of these for the house. It is easily the best money I have ever spent. This machine is awesome. It shoots the ball nice and flat, not with some big arc like when most parents pitch to a child. I find the controls very simple and easy to adjust.
The machine won't throw a perfect pitch every time and I find myself tweaking the speed, changing the ball angle and adjusting the direction frequently but the adjustments are very simple and can be made quickly. Generally though when I get it 'just right' it will give 25 darn near perfect pitches in a row without requiring tweaks. Originally, I used it in the driveway and the feet would 'walk' around a bit and that was a bit of a pain. They recommend putting sandbags on the feet to anchor them in place. I have since moved to a different location in the grass and now it doesn't walk around. I find that the #6 setting is very reliable and accurate. When I go above 6 the ball location becomes a bit more erratic.
So, as my son gets older and older I plan to keep it at 6 and just move the machine progressively closer. For all the money that people spend on baseball camps, very pricey bats & private lessons, there is no better way to spend your money than on one of these machines.
Your kid can easily hit 500 swings a week with this machine and that's the best way to learn to hit, actually hitting. We used it with a little 5 year old girl that's never played softball and she was jacking the ball within minutes (with some instruction). Another boy that we've worked with all summer and never got him to hit was crushing the ball after about 4 sessions.
The lightweight balls allow the kids to hit endlessly without the pain of real baseballs. Furthermore, the lightweight balls are unlikely to break things (including kids!).
We've hit garage doors, cars, windows, window screens, pool cages, just about everything (thus the new location) and haven't broken anything. My son got hit by a pitch while I still getting used to it and as soon as he got hit he said, 'I'm not hurt.' And just kept hitting. Try that with a real baseball and see what happens to your ball player's attitude/progress. I love not having the boys wear a helmet. They stay so much cooler and you can see the huge smiles on their faces!
If a grown up decides to hit one they can easily hit the ball 200 feet, so you can have a lot of fun with this system. I'm glad I bought this for my son when he was 7. I only wish I would have bought it when he was 5 because it is the best money I've ever spent on anything. I bought 3 dozen additional balls and that seems pretty good. You can use tennis balls too but that means your windows may get broken.
The Atec Power Strike is a really good solid machine that compares with the Jugs Light flight. It’s quiet and has plenty of power.
I like that it throws 3 size foam balls. Softball, regular baseball and golf ball size. It’s great for a 5 Yr old coach pitch to pro level players.
Great for the backyard. The only bad thing I have found so far is the swivel head to throw curves doesn’t lock well so it slips around. Because I’m just using it in my backyard and the Atec Power Strike was $100 less than the Jugs Light Flight I will keep it and buy 4 dozen balls with the savings. But if I ever buy another foam ball machine I will buy the Jugs Light Flight unless Atec changes the design. I only wish I would have bought it when he was 5 because it is the best money I've ever spent on anything. I bought 3 dozen additional balls and that seems pretty good. You can use tennis balls too but that means your windows may get broken. Ive owned this machine for 4 years and have used it heavily.
I coached a 10U team and we used this machine for hitting within a gym.(confined space) never had to worry about breaking windows or kids getting hit (we had no surrounding nets). But even if kids do get hit, the balls really don't hurt, certainly not like a real softball would.
So it's safer especially for younger kids. It's accurate but not precise which I found to be good.so the pitches aren't always in the same spot. Ive used this machine since my kids were 8 yrs old, they now play 14U ball and this machine is still every bit as effective.
Balls are hard enough that you can judge solid contact, which should be your only objective, but soft enough that no one will get hurt. Ideal for indoor (gymnasium) practices but just as useful/effective in the yard or field, which frankly is where I use this most. Only issue is the balls do eventually wear out but I frankly have 1000s of pitches on each ball and only my original 12 balls are basically not all that useful anymore. They tend to act different than the newer balls, which i also actually like for the variation.
I do not recommend the softer balls, suggest the harder balls for indoor and ourdoor applications. Also recommend the harder baseball sized balls over the softballs. They are cheaper, the machine can throw them faster, and frankly speaking it is more challenging for the kids to hit well (enhances their vision - seeing the ball). This machine is amazing. I was looking for a tennis ball canon, but i couldn't find any. So i decided to find a pitching machine.
I searched 100's of machines before i came across this one and it looked reasonably priced, so i bought it. Pro's- It can launch the balls very fast (60mph) We hit a few kids 10 yards away and though it stung, it hurt less then a paintball. So i could see this being a great tool for baseball practices. You can shoot multiple brands of balls. Here is how they performed in order, from best to worst JUGZ-Perfect for this machine, came out the fastest. ATEC-3 come with the machine, they shoot ok, but the JUGZ were way better. POWERSTREAK balls, the fast balls didn't really work (the white ones), but the orange ones work quite well.
They don't shoot as far as the JUGZ. TENNIS BALLS performed similarly to the orange powerstreak balls. Lastly we used a variation of balls we found at the dollar tree/walmart, they were foam so they shot out fast, but didn't go more then 15/20 yards.
Adjustable Speed is nice, you can rapid fire and change the angle of attack Great for dodgeball or american gladiators CONS I wish there was better adjustments for angling it up and down. We built a handle thing for it and that made things a lot easier. If you want to see it in action:. We purchased this machine for my 11 year old son. He plays competitive baseball and loves to work on hitting. Our back yard is small, so we set up a 10'X40' batting cage in our basement.
This machine is the perfect addition. We typically set the machine at 7 or 8 from 40'. I don't know the exact mph equivalent, but it seems very fast. I think it will be at least a few years before he 'outgrows' it. Pitch location is excellent, it typically only takes me 2-3 pitches to make adjustments and then we are ready to go. From that point, all of the pitches stay within the strike zone, although they do very a bit. The balls are a hard foam and work very well in our basement.
You can still tell when solid contact is made, but I don't worry so much about injury. We have played around with putting the machine in the curveball and slider and the ball does seem to break quite a bit. For now we are just focusing on the fast balls. I have also used for my 8 year old on a setting around 5. Any lower then that and the ball does not travel the full 40 feet, but we have used it on around 3 for my 5 year old. He loves hitting like the big boys. Bought for Little League use, more specifically for players ages 10-14, who will start seeing breaking balls.
Pros: Very portable. Easy to set up and adjust to throw inside or outside, breaking balls. Very accurate. This machine can throw two hardnesses of 'soft' softballs, two hardnesses of 'soft' baseballs' (FYI.
I used Jugs brand lite-flight baseballs, which are probably closer to the recommended ATEC Tuffy 'super-soft'. Jugs lite-flight balls work on either the regular soft, or super-soft setting for baseballs. Safe for having kids feed for each other. Cons: When set to faster speed, ball tends to rise slightly, but noticeable for the hitter, since it uses only light flight balls.
(This happens for some machines throwing the heavier dimpled balls fast too, so to be expected for pitching machines using a single wheel.) Can move machine closer to compensate and still simulate faster pitching, but with less rise since not traveling as far. Since this uses balls that are soft, no risk of injury to ball feeding person. (The sample Tuffy regular 'soft' baseball and softballs that come with the unit are harder than the Jugs lite-flight balls, and though not much mass, could hurt if get hit in sensitive spots.) Does not come with carrying bag.
Would be nice to have a bag to carry the legs with the main unit, but can probably find a suitable bag somewhere. Very solid pitching machine.
My only concern with purchasing this machine was the fact that it will only pitch the SFT balls. The balls are reasonable priced and they act much like a regular baseball when hit. Pitches are very accurate and consistent. We've also used this machine for throwing pop flies. The balls are a little harder to catch since they don't stick in the glove quite as hard, being 1/3 the weight but they're also a lot softer and my little guy isn't afraid to get under a pop fly since they won't leave a big bruise if he misses.
I have both a younger machine pitch baseball player and a fast-pitch softball starter, so our at-home practices were getting complicated. This machine is one of the few that can handle both without spending an exorbitant amount of money. It is easily converted from baseball to softball (once you figure out how to change the settings- the instructions are not that clear), and can be infinitely adjusted to throw just about any pitch, fly ball, or ground ball that could be experienced in a game.
The only drawback is the practice balls are lighter and softer than game balls, but not worrying about bruises or broken windows from missed balls makes focusing on form and consistency much easier. That said, don't underestimate the power of this machine- at full speed it packs a punch even experienced adults find challenging. This little green monster is awesome for the price. I needed something to get my 11 year old son up to speed on hitting without totally crushing the bank account. And I sincerely feel this does the job.
Atec Power Streak Review
The balls are somewhat expensive, but its worth it considering your not gonna break anything. We use the SFT yellow balls mainly. As mentioned in prior reviews, it tends to start walking off target after so many pitches, but it only takes the ever so slightest adjustment to put it back on track. We run this thing at the 10 setting @ 46/50 ft.
I have no idea how fast the balls are traveling, but you might want to move the machine closer up to the batter if you feel it isn't fast enough. Or, you can run the SFT white balls which do come out faster. It greatly helped my son.
